When last we met telling the story of Mobile, Alabama’s musical history, we took you on a journey from the heart of the city’s music world, the Down the Bay community and the formation of the Excelsior Band, going all the way to 1955 and the invasion of roll ‘n’ roll on the radio and jukeboxes.

In part two of The Beat of the Bay, we pick up the story once again in 1955 with an amazing voice from Mobile that was a bridge between R&B, jazz, blues, and gospel, the great Lil Greenwood. We’ll recall Elvis Presley’s first visits to Mobile playing at Ladd Stadium, dining at Johnny’s Drive-In at the Loop, and freaking out the principal of Vigor High School in Prichard with his gyrating hips and “disgusting” humor. Despite being a flop at the high school, Elvis did pretty well for himself.

From there we move through the decades, recalling some names you may have heard of and forgotten like the bluegrass gospel group, the Sullivan Family, and names you may have never heard of. Have you heard the Swingle Singers and their intricate fusion of classical, jazz, and pop music? And did you know that Mobile has a connection with Ike & Tina Turner, James Brown, and Parliament-Funkadelic, aka P-Funk?

And the list goes on and on. We’ll hear from award-winning songwriter Milton Brown about the many hits he has written over the years including Every Which Way But Loose and his experience being Jimmy Buffett’s first agent; we’ll hear cuts from all of the artists we feature, and much more in this jam-packed episode.

See? We told you. There’s way too much music history in Mobile to cover in one episode.
